The Aim of Human Existence – Part 1/3 : 1. Swami Krishnananda

(Spoken at a Conference in Delhi on Sept. 20, 1980)

We have been asked to express our ideas on today’s theme, the aim of human existence. It would appear that an impertinent world of mankind is seeking a pertinent answer to its questions when it asks for means of security and safety from imminent dangers that can threaten its existence from various corners of the world. Mankind seems to be asking for a gain for which it has not worked and does not intend to strive; yet it is not fully conscious of a gulf that seems to be there between what is sought, and the direction in which mankind is moving. We seem to be placing ourselves in a world of quandary.

Is there anything existent that you see with your eyes? We see only movements of things and a decomposition of bodies – a transformation of the structure of things – so that there is visible before our eyes a continuous incessant restless movement rather than a being or an existence of anything. To conceive of an aim of existence there should be a pith of reality, a kernel of significance beneath and behind the vicissitudes of transformation, movement, and the restlessness of life.

The principle of existence cannot be seen with our eyes. What we see, what is tangible to our senses, is a process which is the historical movement of nature, which again includes everything that mankind’s values are. What we are, what anything is, is a part of nature; and the purposes of nature are also our purposes. We cannot have an aim which is different from the aim of nature, because we are constituents of a vast setup called natural phenomenon.

We too are phenomena because we are born, we grow, we decay, and by a process of decomposition we seem to be annihilated totally. We do not hear of the being of anyone who has been physically decomposed and wiped out of existence. Where is being, and where is existence? Anything can be reduced to its ultimate constituents, which appear to demonstrate a character within themselves which is far from anything that can be designated as being. It is not for nothing that a genius like Buddha proclaimed that the world is a procession and not a being. It is transiency and not existence. It is death rather than life. This was a strange picture painted before us by stalwarts who experimented with these techniques of investigating phenomena and found nothing at their base.

IN KERALA AS IN OTHER PARTS OF BHARATHAM COMMUNISTS AND CONGRESS ARE EVIL POLITICAL PARTIES, THOSE OTHER MATCH-STICK ONE MAN PARTIES LEANING WITH THEM ARE ONE FAMILY CORPORATIONS THEY ARE THERE TO FATTENING THEMSELVES, THE COMMUNAL AND ARROGANT MUSLIM AND CHRISTIAN PARTIES HAVE THEIR OWN NARROW FUNDAMENTAL /COMMUNAL AGENDAS, THEY NEVER REGARD NATION AS ONE, THE LAST NEW ADDITIONS VELLAPALLY AND SONS COMPANY IS FOR THEIR PERSONAL GAINS, AND THE ONE CHRISTIAN ONE MAN PARTY TOO FOR PERSONAL GAINS ONLY;

2. I WAS VERY SAD TO WATCH THE HINDU MAHA SANGAMAM ( MET IN KERALA ) PRESIDED BY AMRITANANDAMAYI : FOR ME THE HINDU UNITY THEY PROCLAIM IS A LIE, IF THERE A REALITY OF UNITY TO BE CONFIRMED, THEN THE THE PARTICIPANT LIST OF MAHASANGAMAM MUST NOT BE CASTE BASED;

3. MY HEART BROKE, WHEN A MAN READ THE LIST OF CASTE GROUPS HEADED BY VARIOUS CASTE DENOMINATED ASSOCIATIONS, WHAT A HYPOCRISY, HINDUS WILL NEVER LEARN OR UNDERSTAND THE VALUES OF UNITY;

4. THEY KEEP REMAIN IN VARIOUS CASTE ASSOCIATIONS : BECAUSE OF GREED FOR THE SHARE OF CAKE : "CASTE-RESERVATIONS" : IF THIS THOUGHT PERSISTS THEY NEVER UNITE, THEY ATTACH THEMSELVES IN COMMUNISTS AND CONGRESS LEAD FRONTS : NEVER COME OUT FROM THIS SLAVERY;

5. MOST POISONOUS AMONG HINDUS IN KERALA  : VALLPALLY AND SONS PRIVATE LIMITED : THESE RASCALS HAVE NO PRINCIPLES AND VALUES, THEIR TONGUES FLUCTUATE ANY WAY ACCORDING TO THEIR CONVENIENCE : STATE UNIT OF BJP ARE FOOLS: THESE FATHER AND SON GROUP HAVE NO INFLUENCE ON EZHAVAS VOTES TO NDA : THEY NEED A HOLD ON THE CENTRE FOR THEIR PERSONAL GAINS ONLY.

To, All Members, Maharshi then read out from the Tamil version of 'Yoga Vasishta' the story of Deerga Tapasi who had two sons, Punya and Papa. After the death of the parents the younger one mourned the loss and the elder brother consoled him as follows : “Why do you mourn the loss of our parents? I shall tell you where they are; they are only within ourselves and are ourselves. For the life-current has passed through innumerable incarnations, births and deaths, pleasures and pains, etc., just as the water current in a river flows over rocks, pits, sands, elevations and depressions on its way, but still the current is unaffected. Again the pleasures and pains, births and deaths, are like undulations on the surface of seeming water in the mirage of the ego. The only reality is the Self from where the ego appears, and runs through thoughts which manifest themselves as the universe and in which the mothers and fathers, friends and relatives appear and disappear.
