“Afternoon dream” :

                                                   Swami Tapovanam

To,

All Members,

But it was not quite that easy.

His first challenge was to convince Swami Tapovanam, who was a staunch believer that a sannyasi should lead a life of retirement (from the world) and only remain active in studying the scriptures, taking pilgrimages, and teaching those who come to him.

Swami Tapovanam felt that the highest philosophy of Vedanta could be taught to only those who are pure at heart, and not to all and sundry — the ordinary public — for such people were so consumed by manifold desires that they lacked the subtle mind to comprehend the deep import of the scriptures.

Moreover, if the time was right, would not a person develop true vairagya (dispassion for the world) and automatically leave everything and go to the mountains in search of Truth, and discover their Guru?

Swami Tapovanam had not once left the Himalayas since his renunciation.

As a result, when Swamiji approached him with what he called his “afternoon dream,” Swami Tapovanam admonished him.

“You can’t treat this knowledge like your newspaper business. It is useless to carry Vedanta to the market place!” he exclaimed.

With these words, the “afternoon dream” remained just that — a dream of an afternoon — or at least, so it would seem for another six months.

It is not that Swami Tapovanam did not have sympathy for those who were living without the blessings and guidance of their ancient culture.

He deplored the plight of men, who were so busy with worldly concerns that they had no time to consider and discover the inner Spirit.
